Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy so that it does not result in the birth of a baby. There are many different ways of abortion. Some people have a medical abortion and others have a surgical abortion. A medical abortion is the process of taking prescription pills to cause a miscarriage. Different pills are taken depending on how far into the pregnancy the woman is. If the woman is 9 weeks into the pregnancy, she would receive a pill that would cause an early miscarriage. But there are its side effects. This pill will cause a heavy and painful period. If the woman is 9 to 24 weeks into the pregnancy, she would receive a pill that would cause womb contractions to push out the baby. This procedure also includes an injection to the womb.

If the pill is not the preferred method by the patient, then there is a surgical option. If the woman is 15 weeks into the pregnancy, the baby can be gently pulled out of the womb with suction. But if the woman is 15 to 24 weeks into the pregnancy, narrow forceps will be used to remove the baby through the neck of the womb. Usually the patient will be able to return home on the same day but if the patient was over 20 weeks pregnant then it may require and overnight stay. Below are some pictures of the process of how these surgeries are done.
These are some abortion methods that most people might think of when they hear the word abortion. But there are other methods that some people do either because they don't have enough money or they have no other choice. This is called self-induced abortion, self-induced abortion is when the pregnant women is trying to abort the fetus by using non-medical techniques. A common self-induced method that many women attempt is by using a common household item such as a coat hanger by inserting it in their uterus through the cervix. This method however is very unsafe and is not recommended.
